Ashra Baladi: Recognizing and Interpreting the Egyptian Baladi Progression

The Egyptian Baladi Progression is joyful dialogue between the dancer, the music and musicians. The improvisational nature and rich tones of this musical style can be intimidating, yet this soulful music wants you to dance. So much so, that it will lead you when you know how to listen. This workshop will give you an appreciation for Ashra Baladi in Classic and Modern Egyptian music. We will explore movement vocabulary, with a Baladi feel, while you learn to recognize the musical phrases and transitions most commonly used in this highly structured musical style. We will also discuss ideas for developing an improvisational practice for continued study of the Ashra Baladi. Come prepared to listen to Ashra Baladi in sections and as a whole, to learn vocabulary and culture, to share your experiences, and to dance as we unlock the magic of the Egyptian Baladi Progression.
